Spain observes holy week with extensive tv coverage
Spain kicks off Holy Week with processions across the country, and RTVE is offering unprecedented access to the events, both domestically and from the Vatican.
Rtve launches dedicated holy week channel
RTVE Play has launched a linear channel, RTVE Procesiones, dedicated exclusively to broadcasting the various religious events of Holy Week. The channel will be available until April 6th, offering a comprehensive view of the traditions observed throughout Spain and beyond.
The programming includes live coverage of processions from Palencia (Veracruz and Santo Sepulcro), Mérida (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), Burgos (Santo Encuentro), Medina del Campo (Silencio and Charity Procession), and Málaga (Legion Landing and Calvary Procession).
Beyond the dedicated channel, RTVE’s terrestrial channels (La 1 and La 2) will feature special programming, including films and children's content. Nostalgia calls for a re-run of a beloved 80s program, while La 1 will broadcast classics like The Ten Commandments on Maundy Thursday and Ben-Hur and Pompeii on Good Friday. La 2 will air The Sacred Tunic on Friday evening.
For younger viewers, the Clan channel will expand its morning programming with additional episodes of popular shows like Bluey and Peppa Pig, alongside family-friendly films such as Shrek and Hotel Transylvania. Throughout the week, Team Total Curiosity will run daily, followed by afternoon movie sessions.
Regional news will showcase unique local traditions, including the Empalaos of Extremadura, the Tamborrada of Hellín, and the Rompida de la hora in Calanda. The Danza de la Muerte in Verges and the Bajada del Ángel in Tudela will also be featured.
RTVE Procesiones is accessible via the RTVE Play website and mobile/TV apps, providing a rich tapestry of Spanish religious and cultural traditions for a global audience. The dedication to preserving and sharing these traditions through accessible broadcasting underscores a commitment to cultural heritage that extends far beyond the religious observances themselves.
