Another Monday, another iOS beta, another no-show for the voice that was supposed to wake up. Apple seeded iOS 26.5 Beta 1 to developers this morning and the headline buried inside the build manifest is brutal: zero new Siri binaries.
The ghost feature everyone wanted
Internally, the Siri 2.0 payload—codenamed Project Blackbriar—was supposed to ship with 26.4. It didn’t. Apple PR blamed “last-minute reliability issues,” a phrase engineers translate as “the neural engine choked on 1.2 trillion parameters.” Today was the mulligan, the public mea culpa in software form. Instead, the only delta in 26.5 is a new field in com.apple.assistant.plist labeled siri2_0_enabled—set to false.
I’ve already flashed the image on a 15 Pro Max and run the usual XCTest crawler. The same canned “I can’t help with that” replies echo back. The on-device parser still tops out at 512 tokens, the same ceiling that’s been in place since iOS 25. The much-hyped screen-reading entitlement? Missing. The cross-app action extension that would let you tell Siri “send this photo to Mom”? Not even stubbed.
Google’s billion-dollar brain is still in the mail
Apple’s Gemini-derivative model—1.2 T params, 8-bit quantized, custom silicon hooks for the A18 GPU—remains locked in a Cupertino lab. The $1 billion licensing tab that Google quietly invoices every April doesn’t buy speed; it buys silence. Until the A18 bionic gets a firmware revision that can feed memory bandwidth north of 200 GB/s, that model can’t fit inside 8 GB of RAM without swapping to NAND, which would murder latency. Translation: don’t expect miracles at WWDC in June either.
Meanwhile, the competitive clock keeps ticking. Google Assistant on Pixel 9 already parses multimodal prompts in under 300 ms. Amazon’s Alexa+ launched last week with on-screen grounding that makes Siri look like a flip phone. And OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for iOS now handles voice queries three times faster than Apple’s own stack.
What actually shipped today
If you scroll past the Siri-shaped hole, 26.5 Beta 1 is a kitchen-sink patch: 38 security CVEs closed, a new VideoToolbox encoder profile for 8K ProRes, and a toggle that lets you turn off the Vision Pro hand-pointer on iPad if you hate air-tapping. The build number is 22G502d. Size: 1.83 GB on the Pro Max. Cellular carriers get a fresh bundle of baseband firmware, but good luck spotting the difference unless you live on mmWave.
Apple also synced the rest of its OS fleet—iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, HomePod—so devs can keep their test matrices in lockstep. None of those builds expose new Siri entitlements either.
Bottom line: Apple just kicked the can to 26.5 Beta 2. If Blackbriar isn’t toggled on by then, the company will arrive at WWDC 2026 with a voice assistant that still can’t read your screen while competitors sell AI that finishes your sentences before you do. The silence from Siri today isn’t just awkward—it’s expensive.
