Asian markets rebound on hope, then plunge as iran halts peace accord
Tokyo, November 2, 2023 – A fragile truce between the United States and Iran sent Asian markets soaring earlier this week, but that optimism evaporated swiftly as Tehran announced breaches of the ceasefire terms, triggering a dramatic sell-off across key indices.
Volatility reigns as deal’s future hangs in the balance
The Kospi in Seoul plummeted 1.9%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index retreated 0.4% and mainland China’s Shenzhen Composite shed 0.2%. Even Japan’s Nikkei 225 dipped nearly 0.6%, reflecting a widespread sense of unease. This reversal stands in stark contrast to a rally in Brent crude futures, which surged nearly 2% to above $96 per barrel – a move highlighting the oil market’s sensitivity to geopolitical risk.
The announcement, delivered by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, detailed three clauses allegedly unfulfilled by Washington. Futures on Wall Street and major European benchmarks slid 0.2%, effectively ending a four-day winning streak for global equities. Notably, two Chinese tankers are positioning themselves to be the first to transit the Strait of Hormuz following the tentative agreement – a strategic chokepoint vital for global oil supplies.

Escalation fears intensify
Strategist Peter Dragicevich at Corpay Solutions warned, “The fragility of this ceasefire is being severely tested. While the broader Middle East situation has improved marginally, it remains inherently unstable, and the potential for rapid deterioration is undeniable.” The situation is further complicated by ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon and the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, casting a shadow over the prospects for a lasting resolution.
Beyond equities, the Bloomberg Dollar Index rose 0.1%, while Bitcoin fell 0.5%, trading around $71,000. Gold held steady at roughly $4,700 per ounce. Asian tech stocks mirrored the downturn in their U.S. counterparts, spurred by Meta’s unveiling of a new AI model and Anthropic’s launch of Claude, an agent-building tool. Anthropic itself cautioned about the potential for its latest AI to be overly powerful for widespread deployment.

Trump’s stance firm
Adding to the pressure, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed the deployment of all American military assets in Iran and surrounding areas until the agreement is fully implemented. The White House announced direct negotiations between the two nations, scheduled to commence Saturday in Islamabad. Despite the ceasefire, sporadic clashes persisted throughout the Middle East, including Lebanon, where Israeli forces continue their campaign against Hezbollah.
Templeton Global Investments’ Yiping Liao underscored the precariousness, stating, “Much hinges on the respect for the ceasefire and progress in negotiations. Returning to the pre-conflict status quo will prove exceptionally difficult.” The market’s reaction suggests a heightened risk appetite remains elusive – a chilling indicator in the current environment.
