Oil prices plunge amid easing tensions
nCrude oil futures plummeted by as much as 19% after the US announced it would suspend airstrikes against Iran, leading to hopes of increased oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said passage through the strategic waterway would be secure during the ceasefire period.
nThe Brent crude benchmark fell 13% to $94.50 per barrel, while the MSCI Asia Pacific index surged 5% to its highest level in five weeks, as investors bet that lower oil prices would help contain inflation and revive economic growth.
nThe dollar weakened 0.8% against a basket of currencies, with the won rallying 1.9% against the greenback as South Korea's tech giants, Samsung and SK Hynix, gained 9.2% and 15%, respectively.
nGovernment bond yields in South Korea declined, with the 10-year benchmark slipping to 120 basis points, as the easing of tensions reduced inflation expectations and lowered the likelihood of interest rate hikes by the Bank of Korea before its monetary policy meeting later this week.
nChinese markets also saw gains, with the Shenzhen composite index rising 4.1% and the Hong Kong market, which returned from a holiday, advancing over 3%. The Shanghai composite index added 2.2%.
nEuropean futures also pointed to strong gains, with the Euro Stoxx 50 and DAX indices expected to jump over 5%, while the CAC 40 was seen rising by more than 2%.
nSouth Korean president Moon Jae-in welcomed the ceasefire, saying it would help stabilize the global economy and markets. However, analysts cautioned that the agreement was temporary and that tensions could flare up again.
