Jeff Bezos just ordered 5,408 satellites to chase Elon Musk’s 6,000 Starlinks. The prize: who owns the fibre-optic sky that will move the AI economy, the next war and your next selfie from Everest.

Blue Origin calls the swarm TeraWave. Each bird will cruise between 500 km and 1,200 km, talk to its neighbour through infrared lasers, and deliver 6 terabits per second—enough to copy the entire Netflix catalogue in 38 seconds. But you won’t get a dish on your roof. Bezos wants the 100,000 customers who pay millions, not 25 bucks a month. Think AWS in orbit: a private backbone for governments, high-frequency traders and data centres that prefer vacuum to Virginia.

Musk answered within hours. “Starlink’s next-gen inter-satellite links already beat 6 Tbps,” he posted, implying the figure is yesterday’s news. He can afford the swagger: SpaceX operates roughly 60 % of all active low-Earth objects and has a Falcon 9 rolling off the line every four days. Bezos has yet to launch one TeraWave prototype; Musk has 56 orbital launches scheduled this year alone.

Starlink was built like a social network: scale first, monetise later. A million subscribers in rural Montana, oil rigs in Brazil, camper vans in the Outback. TeraWave is the opposite: scarcity by design, sold like a Bloomberg terminal. The satellites carry optical benches the size of grand pianos; the price tag leaks suggest a single gigabit-per-second lease will start at $50,000 per month. If Starlink is Comcast with rockets, TeraWave wants to be the SWIFT network for data.

The difference is already visible in filings. SpaceX told the FCC it may push 34,400 nodes before 2030. Blue Origin’s licence stops at 5,408, but every bird weighs nearly a tonne and carries a hydrogen coolant stack to keep the lasers cool. Translation: fewer, fatter, pricier.

What looks like a tech flex is already a Pentagon shopping list. During the Ukrainian winter, Starlink became the country’s largest ISP in 72 hours; generals watched drone feeds on tablets powered from backpacks. The US Department of Defence now spends $1.8 billion a year on commercial satcom, and Congress wants two redundant constellations, not one. TeraWave’s pitch: “We can give you a second, classified lane, same latency, different rockets.”

Translation: whoever loses this duel still wins a contract.

Musk’s real moat is not patents; it’s the launcher. Every Starlink batch rides a reused Falcon 9 that already paid for itself lofting someone else’s cargo. Bezos has New Glenn, a stainless-steel behemoth still waiting for its first flight. Until it flies, TeraWave satellites will sit in clean rooms, burning runway money at $1 million a day. The clock is literal: Amazon told shareholders the first TeraWave shell must be half-complete by July 2026 or the FCC yanks the licence.

Wall Street has done the math. Morgan Stanley estimates the winner of the orbital-ISP war will sit on a $150 billion annual toll by 2035, larger than the entire current satellite industry. The loser still pockets double-digit billions supplying spare capacity. That is why both men keep signing more rockets even as Earth-bound markets wobble.
