China turns kamikaze swarms into scrap with pocket-sized lasers

The age of cheap, expendable drones just hit a wall of light. Beijing has unveiled two systems that burn kamikaze quadcopters out of the sky for the price of a few litres of diesel, and the footage is almost serene: a 50-metre hoverbot ignites, folds, drops like a leaf.

Guangjian-11E and Guangjian-21A were designed for the gap every general now loses sleep over—ultra-low altitude, 30 to 80 metres, where traditional radars see nothing and €2 million missiles feel absurd. The 11E is a shoulder-length interceptor that never bothers with a warhead; it sidles up, jams the drone’s data link and lets gravity finish the job. The 21A is a high-energy laser bolted to an armoured truck, sweeping the air with infrared eyes and a 30-kilowatt pencil that melts propellers or fries circuit boards in three to five seconds. State television showed both systems working in tandem: the 11E cripples, the 21A cremates.

The price tag is the real payload. Defence analyst Erwan Halna du Fretay ran the numbers: a single 11E round costs ‘well below €20,000’, compared with the €1.2 million it takes to loft a French MICA against a €500 commercial quad. Multiply that by a swarm of fifty and the maths becomes a migraine. Beijing’s gamble is to turn asymmetric economics on its head—make defence cheaper than offence for the first time since gunpowder.

Inside the 11E’s nose sits a software-defined radio that impersonates the drone’s control protocol, floods it with phantom co-ordinates, then watches the aircraft abandon its mission and drift. No shrapnel, no collateral, no unexploded ordnance littering Ukrainian wheat fields. The 21A goes louder: a graphite heatsink the size of a shoebox lets the laser fire on the move, even off-road, while drawing power from the vehicle’s diesel turbine. Range is classified, but engineers let slip that ‘if you can see it, you can cook it’ up to two kilometres.

What looks like a defensive toy is already an export pitch. African peacekeeping delegations were shown a mobile command centre that networks twenty trucks into a kill web; when one laser latches on, neighbours auto-handoff so the same target is never paid for twice. The demo ended with ten drones annihilated for the cost of a Beijing parking permit.

The Pentagon is watching, quietly. Every Reaper wing in the Middle East now costs more to protect than to field, and Congress has started asking why a laser that fits in a pickup bed is still in a Chinese catalogue instead of an Alabama assembly line. The answer is gallium—China refines 80 % of the world’s supply, the same metal that turns electricity into coherent light. Silicon Valley can design the software; only Guangzhou can feed the hardware.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian front-line crews tape welding goggles to their faces and fly GPS-denied sorties using shoebox atomic clocks smuggled from Shenzhen. The same clocks, ironically, that guide the 11E’s internal navigation when jammers scream. War has become a circular supply chain.

Beijing’s message is blunt: swarm all you want, the sky now belongs to the highest bidder with the smallest power bill. Tomorrow’s battlefield will be measured not in hectares taken but in watts saved. And the watt, right now, is red.
