DIGI, the low-cost Romanian operator, has emerged as the clear winner in Spain's mobile portability war, adding over 10.8 million customers and securing the fourth spot in terms of user base, narrowly trailing Vodafone.

While DIGI's growth rate has slowed in recent months, the operator continues to dominate in portability, adding 200,000 net mobile subscribers between January and February, a 13% decline from the same period last year. Despite this, DIGI has stolen 26,000 more mobile lines from rivals.

Telefónica, on the other hand, had a stellar quarter, gaining 57,000 mobile net additions primarily through portability, more than doubling the 29,000 it picked up in Q1 2025. The operator also saw internet lines grow.

Vodafone, however, suffered a net loss of 94,000 mobile lines in Q1, more than double the 44,000 it lost in the same period last year. Orange also struggled, losing 170,000 mobile subscribers and 62,000 fixed lines in Q1 compared to 150,000 and 53,000 respectively in 2025.

DIGI's low-cost model and aggressive portability strategy have allowed it to leapfrog Vodafone and Orange to become the third-largest operator in Spain, but it faces the challenge of retaining customers who often switch to pricier plans after a few months.
