Several Guardia Civil officers have tragically lost their lives over the past few years attempting to intercept swift narco vessels. Now, Spain is deploying a radical new strategy: autonomous marine drones equipped with AI and advanced sensors to hunt down and neutralize these threats, a move designed to drastically reduce further loss of life.

The Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación (CDTI) has commissioned these unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) from Zelenza, in collaboration with Seadrone e HI Iberia. This isn’t just about hardware; it’s about fundamentally shifting the balance of power in a notoriously difficult operational environment.

Zelenza, with a proven track record in developing maritime drones – including the SEAD-23 currently deployed by the Spanish Navy (pictured), is at the forefront of this initiative. The next generation, tailored for the Guardia Civil, is based on that design, promising enhanced autonomy and tactical superiority.

But the real innovation lies in the system’s ‘swarming’ capabilities. Multiple drones will coordinate seamlessly, forming a virtual ‘pack’ to encircle and track narco vessels, operating entirely without human intervention. This addresses a critical vulnerability – the reliance on manned patrols, which are susceptible to communication disruptions and pose significant risks to personnel.

Pedro Alfaro, CEO of Zelenza, emphasized the company’s commitment: “Our goal is to develop technological solutions that strengthen maritime security and reduce the risk to security forces in operations against organized crime.” The system boasts advanced ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) capabilities, integrating cutting-edge sensors, high-resolution imaging, and sophisticated maritime surveillance – providing real-time intelligence crucial for rapid response.

The SEAD-23-based USV is a seven-meter, high-speed vessel constructed from carbon fiber, capable of reaching speeds of up to 36 knots thanks to its waterjet propulsion and a 320 horsepower diesel engine. Its extended range – potentially exceeding a week at cruising speed – and modular architecture, incorporating optical and infrared sensors, RF detectors, and even weapon deployment capabilities, make it a remarkably versatile asset. It's already undergoing rigorous testing by the Spanish Navy, and the Guardia Civil version will undoubtedly build upon this foundation.
