Gemini gets a play store boost: google’s ai now installs apps with a chat

Google is injecting a serious dose of convenience into Gemini, its AI assistant, with the rollout of a new connected app feature for the Google Play Store. Forget manually scrolling through endless app listings – now, you can simply ask Gemini to find, install, and even purchase in-app items, all within your chat interface.

Android users finally get a gemini shortcut

Initially launching exclusively on the Pixel 10 Pro, this ‘Play connected app’ streamlines the app discovery process. Need a productivity app for meal planning? Just ask Gemini, and it’ll surface relevant suggestions, directing you to the Play Store with a single tap to complete the installation. You can even request specific apps by name, search for in-app purchases, or buy a Google Play gift card – all without leaving the chat window.

The catch? it's still android-only (for now)

There’s a key limitation: this functionality is currently restricted to Android devices. iPhone users are, predictably, left out in the cold. Google’s citing availability variations by country and device, adding a layer of uncertainty for those hoping to leverage Gemini’s app-finding prowess.

Requirements to get connected

Crucially, ‘Keep Activity’ must be enabled – Gemini simply can’t connect to the Play Store without it.
