Google Maps Gets an AI Overhaul: Ask Maps Adds Task Automation and Personal Intelligence

Google is significantly updating Google Maps with new AI-powered features through its Ask Maps application, moving beyond basic navigation. The update focuses on proactive assistance and task automation.

Key New Features

Ask Maps now goes beyond simply answering questions. Users can request the app to find specific dishes and recommend restaurants that serve them, even adding items directly to a virtual shopping cart. Google is also integrating real-time public transportation data, expanded hotel search options, and the ability to leverage Gmail data (with user permission) for personalized recommendations.

AI-Powered Assistance

A key shift is the application’s ability to guide users through entire processes, such as booking a restaurant or finding a hotel, rather than just providing initial results. Users can ask for hotels with specific criteria (ratings, price, location) and receive real-time price comparisons and availability checks. The AI can also suggest activities like concerts or events based on location.

Expanding Functionality and Integration

Google is piloting these features in the United States, initially partnering with Square and Toast for food ordering and planning to integrate Uber Eats later. Furthermore, the company is developing the Universal Commerce Protocol for Food to streamline restaurant-app connections. A new ‘Personal Intelligence’ feature connects Ask Maps with Gmail, allowing the app to utilize reservation and travel information for tailored suggestions, though this is currently opt-in.
