Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux kernel, has a reputation for speaking his mind bluntly. In a recent email to the Linux kernel mailing list, he confirmed that the Release Candidate 5 (RC5) version is a positive sign, hinting at an imminent final release of Linux 7.0.

Torvalds eyes smooth sailing with linux 7.0

The Linux kernel has experienced some turbulence in recent versions, with Release Candidates (RCs) noticeably larger than usual. However, Torvalds sees the RC5 as a step in the right direction, with a smaller size indicating bug fixes and polishing rather than new feature additions.

According to Torvalds, the majority of changes in RC5 are minor, with most being small, incremental updates to drivers and core architecture. These refinements have brought the overall size of the patch set back into a more normal range.

Given the smaller scope of changes and Torvalds' optimistic assessment, it appears that Linux 7.0 is nearing a stable state. The community can now focus on thorough testing before the final release.
