Microsoft swaps lasers for leds to cut data-center power in half

Inside the humming cathedrals of Azure, photons are about to travel by lamplight instead of laser. Microsoft revealed on Thursday that its Cambridge lab has coaxed arrays of MicroLEDs—yes, the same low-power dots that light your smartwatch—into ferrying terabits between servers while slashing energy burn by 50 %.

The trick sounds almost childish: pack thousands of hair-thin glass cores into a single strand, then flicker each core independently like a microscopic billboard. The result is 2,048 parallel channels that laugh at dust specks and temperature swings that would blind a traditional laser transceiver.

From lab toy to rack-ready by 2027

Paolo Costa, Partner Research Manager and the physicist who nursed the project from late-night chalkboard sketches to a palm-sized prototype, says the first silicon photonics package will shrink again before it lands in partner factories. MediaTek has already taped out a companion chip; Microsoft’s timeline points to commercial plugs in late 2027.

Copper, still king for short hops, guzzles electrons. Lasers, the reigning monarch of long-haul glass, demand thermo-electric coolers and precision lenses. LEDs sit in the sweet spot: cheap, cool, dumb enough to survive a forklift collision. Doug Burger, Technical Fellow at Microsoft Research, calls the prospect “a rewire of the entire cloud stack—storage, memory, even CPU-to-CPU gossip.”

While one team plays with light bulbs, another has spent three years threading hollow-core fiber across Azure regions. The glass is a straw: a void ringed by silica that guides light 47 % faster than conventional single-mode, trimming latency by one third. Frank Rey, who oversees Azure’s hyperscale network, admits the combo—MicroLED emitters plus air-filled glass—turns the network into a silent, low-calorie marathon runner.

Early adopters won’t notice new logos; they’ll simply see their virtual machines boot quicker and their bills shrink. The real prize is Microsoft’s emerging monopoly on patience: every millisecond saved inside the data center is a millisecond it can rent to the next customer.

Costa shrugs when asked if rivals will copy the playbook. “Patents are filed,” he says, “but the physics is public.” Translation: the race to dim the lights has already started, and Microsoft just kicked the plug.
