Elon Musk just bet the launchpad again. While competitors wrestle with NIMBY protests and overloaded grids, he sketched orbital server farms bathed in raw sunlight, no neighbors, no power bills—only the small matter of hoisting 100 tons of silicon per shot. SpaceX’s next Starship test, slated for next month, is the make-or-break audition for that fantasy.
Starship is the ticket, not the afterthought
Karin Fronczke, the Fidelity executive who funneled private capital into SpaceX back when Falcon 9 flew a mere 13 times a year, keeps a spreadsheet that tracks cost per kilowatt hour to orbit. She admits the math still stings. “Conceptually it makes sense,” she told Bloomberg TV, “but we watch Starship like hawks. Reusability has to slash launch cost by an order of magnitude or the whole model collapses.”
Fidelity’s stake, first inked in 2015, has already watched the company shift from scrappy upstart to the railroad of space: a payload leaves Earth every 48 hours, Starlink has 10 million subscribers, and SpaceX now muscles 80–90 % of off-planet cargo. The catch: every one of those metrics rides on a rocket that has yet to land without drama.

Musk’s weekend reveal of Terafab—a joint Tesla-SpaceX foundry in Austin—adds another gear to the machine. The plant will fabricate custom silicon for robotics, AI workloads and, yes, those hypothetical orbital servers. Vertical integration is no longer a luxury; it is the only way to control price when your supply chain starts 200 km above the Gulf of Mexico.
The gamble is vintage Musk: fold the supply chain, own the launch, write the software, build the brains. If Starship nails reusability, the kilowatt cost curve bends downward and the sky ceases to be a limit; it becomes cheap real estate. If it doesn’t, Fidelity’s spreadsheet turns red and the orbital data-center deck becomes another slide deck buried in a Boca Chica hangar.
For now, every countdown is a referendum on whether computing can emigrate from the irritations of Earth to the silence of orbit. The next ignition will tell us if shareholders are buying a revolution—or financing fireworks.
