The risks are undeniable; spaceflight remains inherently perilous, but the technological hurdles overcome are breathtaking.

While the Orion spacecraft itself is a marvel of American engineering, its very heartbeat – the European Service Module (ESM) – is a testament to international collaboration. Airbus Crisa, based in Tres Cantos, Spain, has been entrusted with developing the Thermal Control Units (TCUs) for the ESM. Without these units, the astronauts would simply not survive, as they meticulously regulate temperatures within Orion, a crucible where temperatures swing wildly from -200°C in shadow to a blistering 100°C in sunlight. They also manage the crucial supply of water and air – life’s essentials in the vacuum of space.

The ingenuity doesn’t stop there. GMV, a Spanish Technology firm, has been instrumental in mission anomaly management, developing a critical tool designed to identify, analyze, and resolve potential incidents during operations. Their team even trained the astronauts on the ESA’s EveryWear system, a medical and activity monitoring application honed over nearly a decade on the International Space Station, used for everything from tracking food intake to communicating with flight surgeons.

HV Sistemas, a Madrid-based company, provided testing equipment for the Service Module’s Consumables Storage System (CSS), ensuring the integrity of water and gas supplies. And Alter, from Seville, handled the procurement of critical electronic components and conducted extensive laboratory testing, even evaluating high-performance LEDs for potential robotic applications on a future lunar base.

Finally, Integrasys, also from Seville, is the sole Spanish company selected by NASA to monitor the Artemis II mission, using a 2.4-meter Orbisat antenna at the University of Seville’s engineering school. They're tracking Orion’s trajectory in real-time, providing crucial data for NASA’s analysis.

The separation of the crew and service modules is imminent, with the ESM – and its Spanish-built components – set to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, disintegrating harmlessly, while the crew module splashes down safely in the Pacific, off the coast of California.
