Pokémon go gamers train coco's delivery bots to outsmart city chaos

The same eyes that hunt Pikachu on crowded sidewalks are now teaching Coco Robotics' squat courier bots how to survive downtown's concrete jungle. Niantic Spatial flips on its visual-positioning system today, feeding 30 billion player-captured images into Coco's fleet so the lunch-box-sized machines can dodge scaffolding, food trucks and GPS dead zones without blinking.

Until now, the San Francisco startup's cute four-wheelers leaned on brittle satellite fixes. One wrong bounce off a glass façade and the bot thought it was two blocks away. Enter Niantic's crowd-sourced point cloud: every gym badge, Ingress portal and accidental AR snapshot becomes a breadcrumb for Coco's navigation stack. The deal, signed last week, puts the gaming company's spatial AI on real-world payroll for the first time.

John Hanke, Niantic's CEO, shrugs at the mash-up.
