Placing your PlayStation 5 vertically could be a grave error, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Board Repair Guy, a console repair expert, warns that this orientation can trigger serious internal failures related to the cooling system. His recent TikTok video has ignited concern among gamers, raising questions about a potential design flaw in Sony’s flagship console.

The core issue, according to the expert, stems from the liquid metal used to cool the PS5’s processor. Over time, gravity causes this fluid to accumulate in the lower portion of the console when positioned vertically. This displacement leaves areas of the processor thermally uncooled, leading to overheating and, eventually, irreversible damage to the motherboard.

Liquid metal's double-edged sword

Sony opted for liquid metal – a gallium, indium, and tin alloy – for its superior thermal conductivity, a significant upgrade over traditional thermal paste. The material efficiently transfers heat away from the CPU. However, its fluidity is also its vulnerability. Unlike non-conductive pastes, liquid metal doesn’t dry out; it shifts. If the console isn't level, the metal can migrate, creating cold spots on the chip.

The problem isn't unique to the PS5. While liquid metal enhances cooling in high-performance PCs and GPUs, its application in sealed consoles presents challenges. The PS5 is designed for extended use, but its orientation and environment aren’t always stable. Troubleshooting a PC is one thing; accessing the internal components of a sealed console is another.

Reports have previously hinted at the risks associated with using liquid metal in consoles. Despite these concerns, Sony has retained the same cooling system in the revised PS5 models, including the PS5 Slim. This suggests confidence in the original design, even with technical warnings.

Experts advise simple preventative measures: maintain a horizontal position on a stable, well-ventilated surface. Avoid placing the console in enclosed spaces or against walls. Regular cleaning of the fans and vents also helps prevent dust buildup, ensuring consistent cooling.

The PS5's powerful performance hinges on its cooling system functioning correctly. Months of vertical use could compromise that. Protecting a €549 investment often requires as little as a simple positional adjustment. Ignoring these warnings is a risk.
