Qualcomm's next chip may not be the powerhouse we expected
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips have long been the undisputed kings of Android performance, but a potential shift is brewing. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 set a high bar, early whispers about its successor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series (due in September 2026), suggest a more modest upgrade than many enthusiasts anticipated—specifically, a CPU boost under 20%.
The plateauing problem: are mobile processors hitting a wall?
The leak, centered around the high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, which will almost certainly be built on a 2nm process, has sparked a debate within the mobile tech community. After years of exponential jumps in processing power, are we reaching a point of diminishing returns? Power efficiency remains critical – nobody wants a phone that dies before lunchtime – alongside the ability to handle demanding graphics and AI tasks seamlessly. It's a trifecta of requirements, and hitting all three is proving challenging.
But don’t write off Qualcomm just yet. The company appears to be pivoting its core design, ditching the traditional uniform core layout for a more complex 2+3+3 structure with varying clock speeds. This unorthodox approach, similar to what we've seen in MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600, suggests a focused push towards raw power. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is still expected, promising a noticeable, albeit smaller, performance bump.

Gpu gains could be the real story
The silver lining here is the potential for significant upgrades on the graphics front. Qualcomm is rumored to be implementing a next-generation Adreno A850 GPU, boasting a larger cache and support for faster LPDDR6 memory. The result could be a considerable boost in gaming performance and AI workloads, even if the CPU improvements prove underwhelming. This focus on the GPU reflects a broader industry trend, as mobile gaming continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible on smartphones.
Interestingly, MediaTek is seemingly following a similar playbook. Leaks indicate the Dimensity 9600, also slated for a 2nm build by TSMC, will feature a 2+3+3 CPU configuration, emphasizing raw power over a balanced approach. This echoes the design of the Dimensity 9500, which prioritized both performance and efficiency. The Dimensity 9600’s new GPU promises enhanced visual fidelity and advanced rendering capabilities, including ray tracing—features that will undoubtedly appeal to gamers.
Of course, all this cutting-edge hardware comes at a cost. While pricing details are still under wraps, it's safe to assume that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series won’t be aiming for the budget-conscious consumer. The race for mobile supremacy is becoming increasingly expensive, and users will ultimately bear the brunt of that competition.
