Robot dogs patrol data centers: a $175k security upgrade?
The sprawling server farms powering our cloud-based lives are increasingly turning to an unlikely guardian: the robotic dog. Forget visions of metallic humanoids; Boston Dynamics’ Spot and similar quadrupedal robots are quietly becoming a crucial, and surprisingly expensive, element in securing the next generation of artificial intelligence data centers.

A growing demand amidst an infrastructure boom
The data center construction wave, largely fueled by the insatiable appetite for AI compute, is staggering. JLL reports a staggering 35 gigawatts of new capacity under construction in North America alone. These facilities, often sprawling across vast tracts of land and demanding 24/7 operation, present unique security challenges. Enter the nimble, persistent, and tireless robot dog.
“We've witnessed a dramatic surge in interest from data center operators over the past year,” says Merry Frayne, Senior Product Management Director at Boston Dynamics. It’s a logical progression, she suggests, given the monumental investments happening in this sector.
While robotic dogs have already proven their worth in emergency response, military applications, and industries like oil and mining, the data center boom is carving out a distinct new niche. These aren't simply perimeter patrols; data center operators want much more, seeking a return on the hefty investment – upwards of $175,000 for a Spot model, potentially reaching $300,000 with add-ons.
Beyond Perimeter Security: A Mobile Inspection Force
The capabilities these robots offer extend far beyond basic security. Data center operators are envisioning them as mobile inspection units, equipped to map sites, monitor construction progress, and, critically, detect anomalies. Spot, for example, can be tasked with identifying thermal anomalies, leaks, unusual sounds, or even open doors – all potential precursors to costly disruptions.
Ghost Robotics, another player in the space, offers the Vision 60, priced from $165,000, which excels at external perimeter security. Michael Subhan, Ghost Robotics’ Director of Growth, highlights a compelling economic argument: “A human security guard costs around $150,000 annually. With a robot and a guard, you get enhanced coverage for a similar investment, and the robot doesn't call in sick or take vacation days.”
It's a partnership, not a replacement. As Subhan emphasizes, “The Vision 60 is an extra set of eyes, assisting the human guard.” Similarly, Boston Dynamics’ Frayne stresses that Spot is designed to augment, not supplant, human security personnel, with operators monitoring live video feeds from a central control room.
The mobility of these robots is paramount. Large data centers contain areas inaccessible to fixed sensors or cameras. A single charge can power hours of patrol across varied terrain and weather conditions – a significant advantage given the increasing construction of data centers in diverse climates.
While widespread adoption is still in its early stages – Frayne declined to disclose specific implementation numbers, citing confidentiality agreements – companies like Novva Data Centers have already publicly deployed Spot, using it to collect data, monitor equipment, and alert staff to unusual activity. The potential, however, is undeniable.
With an estimated 5,000 data centers currently operating in the US and another 800 to 1,000 under construction, the opportunity for robotic companies is considerable. The relentless expansion of AI is driving unprecedented infrastructure investment, and the robotic dog, it seems, is ready to answer the call – one patrol route at a time.
