Samsung quietly preps galaxy watch 9 with same shell, bigger battery

Samsung’s next wrist computer is already humming inside a locked US test lab. Firmware tagged SM-L345U—long rumored to be the Galaxy Watch 9—surfaced late Tuesday on an internal Samsung server, signaling that the company has pushed the watch from CAD drawings to live stress tests.

The case stays, the juice creeps up

Leaked certification docs echo the server breadcrumb: 40 mm and 44 mm housings return unchanged, down to the millimeter. The only physical wiggle room sits under the hood, where a 435 mAh rated cell—up from the 44 mm Watch 8’s 418 mAh rated pack—promises a whisper-thin endurance bump. Marketing will still print “typical” capacity north of 450 mAh, but the raw number betrays Samsung’s real strategy: squeeze one more morning workout out of the same mold before a rumored 2025 redesign.

That conservatism is deliberate. Apple’s Watch Series 12 is shaping up to be a spec-sheet yawn, and Qualcomm’s long-promised next-gen wearable chip is still a slide deck. Samsung sees no burning reason to gamble on a radical chassis when the battlefield is half-asleep.

5G ultra sibling waits in the wings

The firmware drop covers only the vanilla Watch 9; no Ultra 2 code has leaked yet. Industry whisperers expect both models to share an August Unpacked stage, with the Ultra variant adding standalone 5G—an option that still makes carriers salivate and most users shrug. Samsung’s logic: strap a modem to the rugged edition, keep the vanilla thin, and cover every wrist in the room.

What the firmware doesn’t say is how much of the Watch 9’s brains will be rented to Galaxy AI. OneUI 6 Watch, already in closed beta, offloads sleep-coaching algorithms to the cloud unless you opt out. The new battery may offset the extra radio time, but only if Samsung resists the urge to background-process every heartbeat into a server farm.

For now, the most telling detail is the file date: April 22. That is almost identical to last year’s Watch 8 leak timetable, which delivered retail units 97 days later. If the calendar holds, your wrist will vote with Samsung’s incrementalism before the first autumn leaf drops.
