Samsung's one ui 8.5 rollout: are ten beta rounds really necessary?
Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series users have been patiently (or perhaps impatiently) navigating the One UI 8.5 beta program for months now, and the question on everyone's mind is: when will the stable release finally arrive? A new rumor suggests a timeline, but it also raises a larger point about Samsung’s software deployment strategy.
The beta grinding: a month away, maybe
According to leaker Tarun Vats, Samsung plans a total of ten beta updates for One UI 8.5. Two more are slated for April – Beta 9 around April 9th and Beta 10 around April 20th. This aligns with Samsung’s typical two-week release cadence. Assuming Vats is correct, a stable launch could realistically be just a month away, potentially hitting Galaxy S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra devices in early May.
Of course, the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, which have also been receiving beta builds, are likely candidates for early stable releases as well. The Galaxy S25 FE, having received its first beta at the end of March, might be brought into the fold slightly later.
But here’s where things get interesting. Ten beta releases? That's a considerable amount of testing. While iterative refinement is vital, the extended beta period for One UI 8.5, already available on the Galaxy S26, feels excessive. It’s as if Samsung is overthinking the process, potentially delaying the experience for users on older devices.
The broader rollout also includes the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, the Galaxy S24 series, and the Galaxy Tab S11 series. Even a beta for the Galaxy S23 series has surfaced on Samsung’s test servers, suggesting the software’s public debut is imminent. But the sheer number of betas still raises eyebrows.
What’s truly perplexing is the Galaxy S23 series, which has already endured a significant software lifecycle. Dragging out the One UI 8.5 release for these devices feels less like meticulous testing and more like a drawn-out process.
Samsung’s software releases have always been a subject of debate. While the company has improved in recent years, this extended beta period for One UI 8.5 highlights a lingering commitment to exhaustive testing, even when it means pushing back the user experience. It’s a fascinating trade-off between polish and promptness, and one that users are increasingly scrutinizing.
