Stop aiming your router antennas like a tv remote—it's killing your wi-fi
Your router’s antennas are not laser pointers. Pointing them at the sofa, the PlayStation or the smart fridge is the fastest way to turn yesterday’s Wi-Fi 7 beast into a wheezing 56k modem. The doughnut-shaped radiation pattern emanates from the antenna’s flanks, not its tip, and every degree you tilt in the wrong direction carves a dead zone into your home.
The invisible doughnut in your living room
Imagine each antenna as a glowing, horizontal bagel. The signal rolls out sideways, perpendicular to the rod. Stand the antenna straight up and the bagel lies flat, blanketing the floor below and the ceiling above while ignoring the corridor ahead. Lay it flat and the bagel flips vertical, spraying signal up two storeys but leaving the kitchen in shadow. Manufacturers ship most consumer routers with two or three adjustable stalks precisely so users can layer several bagels at opposing angles. Yet nine out of ten households still line every antenna like a firing squad aimed at the smart-TV.
Interference loves that mistake. Microwave ovens, baby monitors and Bluetooth speakers all operate in the 2.4 GHz swamp. When antennas overlap their toroidal fields, that swamp turns into a feedback loop of retransmissions and dropouts. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands buy you cleaner spectrum, but physics is pitiless: every wall, mirror or metal lampshade still chops the signal. Tilting one antenna 45° clockwise and its neighbour 45° counter-clockwise creates spatial diversity, letting the router’s MU-MIMO chipset triangulate each client and switch to the path with the fewest reflections.

Two tweaks that actually move the needle
First, height. Move the router one metre above the tallest piece of furniture and away from the TV bracket. Signal grazing the top of a bookshelf diffracts less than signal punching through a steel frame. Second, asymmetry. If you run four antennas, set the outer pair vertical and the inner pair at 30°–45° outward. The vertical pair handles phones and tablets held upright; the angled pair blankets laptops and consoles lower down. Field tests run by TechFlux in a 90 m² London flat show a 38 % jump in median throughput and a 52 % drop in ping spikes after a two-minute rotation session.
Aluminium foil “reflectors” taped behind the antennas do widen the bagel, but they also bounce energy back into the circuit, raising noise. The same time is better spent updating firmware: Wi-Fi 6E routers with 160 MHz channels can push 2.4 Gbps if the chipset is patched past the launch-day bugs. If the hardware predates 2019, no contortionist choreography will rescue it; the antenna connectors themselves cap at 2×2 streams. Upgrade before you twist.
Dead zones gone, Zoom stutters silenced, 4K streams finally buffer-free. All for the price of a slight wrist movement and the humility to stop treating radio waves like light sabres.
