Xiaomi prepares to disrupt the foldable market with a massive display
Xiaomi is gearing up to challenge the established foldable phone giants, reportedly planning a new device boasting a significantly wider display – a move that could seriously rattle Apple’s upcoming iPhone Ultra and Samsung’s Z Fold 8.
A new standard in foldables?
Rumors swirling around the industry point to Xiaomi’s next book-style foldable, tentatively dubbed the ‘Xiaomi 18 Fold,’ adopting an aspect ratio mirroring the Huawei Pura X Max. Leaker Kartikey Singh suggests this represents a shift towards a wider display format, potentially setting a new industry trend.
The device is expected to launch in the first half of 2026, and initial reports indicate a substantial leap in specifications. Specifically, an engineering sample is rumored to feature a triple-camera system, headlined by a staggering 200MP main sensor – a figure that could quickly become the new benchmark for this category of smartphones.
Beyond megapixels: the bigger picture
While Honor’s Magic V6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 already offer triple-camera setups, including 200MP main sensors, Xiaomi’s move signals a deeper commitment to expansive displays. The Pura X Max, however, currently tops out at a 50MP main sensor, highlighting the potential gap Xiaomi intends to bridge.
But it’s not just about megapixels. The shift towards wider displays – similar to what Apple is reportedly pursuing with the iPhone Ultra and Samsung’s Fold 8 – suggests a broader design philosophy. Apple is anticipated to utilize dual cameras, mirroring the iPhone Air, while Samsung may stick with 50MP sensors.
The challenges, however, are significant. Xiaomi’s track record internationally has been limited, with previous foldable models largely confined to the Chinese market. Launching the Xiaomi 18 Fold outside of China remains a considerable hurdle, and the company's history suggests a cautious approach to global expansion.
