Originally developed as a specialized tool for the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Expert RAW app to combat the distortions of submerged photography – washed-out colors, the dreaded blue-green tint, and motion blur – Ocean Mode has now made its way to Samsung’s latest foldable. This isn’t a surprise, considering it debuted on the S25 Ultra just weeks ago and was initially designed for the S24 Ultra.

The core of Ocean Mode lies in its ability to intelligently correct color balance, effectively pulling back the reds and oranges that are relentlessly stripped away by water. It also employs a sophisticated motion blur reduction algorithm, a critical component for capturing stable shots in currents. A caveat, and a welcome upgrade

However, there’s a significant limitation: the Z Fold 7’s IP48 rating, which offers splash resistance, isn’t designed for prolonged submersion. Samsung is emphatically advising users to employ an underwater housing to protect the device’s sensitive components. Remember, saltwater is a corrosive beast, and even minor breaches can lead to irreversible damage. Let’s be clear – this isn’t a submersible device.

Despite this restriction, the inclusion of Ocean Mode represents a tangible step forward for foldable cameras. For too long, foldables have been viewed as compromises when it comes to image quality, lagging behind the renowned camera systems of the S series. With the Z Fold 7 packing a formidable 200MP main sensor, this specialized shooting mode significantly bolsters the device’s overall value proposition. It’s a subtle, yet telling, move from Samsung.

I witnessed the mode in action during Unpacked, and frankly, it’s impressive. Seeing the software actively counteract the chromatic shift as you descend into deeper water is revealing. It’s a testament to how far mobile photography has progressed. But let’s be honest – the vast majority of users won’t be taking their Z Fold 7 diving. It’s a niche feature for a select few, but one that undeniably elevates the device’s capabilities.
